چکیده

To assess the tolerance and phytoaccumulation ability of the duckweed Lemna gibba L. to copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni), the aquatic plants were exposed to different concentrations of Cu and Ni (0.1 – 2.0 mg/L) in quarter Coïc and Lesaint solution at pH = 6.0 (± 0.1) and under a daily regime of 12 h light. Copper and nickel were tolerated by L. gibba at concentrations ≤ 0.3 mg/L and ≤ 0.5 mg/L, respectively. However, plant growth decreased by 50% (I50) when the medium contained 0.45 mg/L of Cu or 0.75 mg/L of Ni. The observed LCI (lowest concentration causing complete inhibition) were 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L respectively in the presence of Cu and Ni. Results from metal analysis in plant tissues revealed a high accumulation of copper and a low accumulation of nickel within the plant (for concentrations causing no growth inhibition) and a corresponding decrease of metals in the water. The duckweed L. gibba L. could be a good candidate for the removal of low concentrations of copper from polluted water.

Growth Response of the Duckweed Lemna Minor to Heavy Metal Pollution

To assess the tolerance and effect of heavy metals pollution on the duckweed Lemna minor, the aquatic plants were exposed to different concentrations of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in a quarter Coïc and Lessaint solution at pH = 6.1 (± 0.1) and under a daily regime of 16 h light (101 μmol/m2.s1). Copper at 0.2 mg/L and nickel at 0.5 mg/L promoted the growth of Lemna fro...

Boron removal by the duckweed Lemna gibba: a potential method for the remediation of boron-polluted waters.

Boron (B) is often found in polluted and desalinated waters. Despite its potentially environmental damaging effects, efficient treatments are lacking. The duckweed Lemna gibba has been shown to remove toxic elements from water; however, its applicability to B removal is unknown. In this study, L. gibba was examined for its tolerance to B in water and its B removal efficiency. Duckweed plants we...

Phytoremediation of Tetracycline and Degradation Products from Aqueous Solutions

The present study aims at phytoremediation of Lemna gibba L. in aqueous solutions with different concentrations of TC and Degradation Products (DPs). It also tries to determine whether there are differences in TC, ETC, EATC, and ATC levels, accumulated by Lemna gibba L. Exposure concentrations of 50, 100, and 300 ppb have been selected for TC and DPs, showing that the highest TC50, TC100, and T...

Uptake of Some Elements with Aquatic Plants Exposed to the Effluent of Wastewater Treatment Plant

In this study, in the removal of macro (P, S, Na, K, Ca, Mg) and micro (Sb, Ba, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Mo, Se, Ag, Zn) elements in the effluent of Elazig Wastewater Treatment Plant, the efficiency of Lemna minor L. and Lemna gibba L. has been studied comparatively. For this aim, fronds of these plants have been adapted to the effluent of the treatment plant that feeds pilot scale reactors. The...
